Piaggio, the well established Italian auto maker, has introduced a new scooter in the Indian auto market, Vespa VX at a price of Rs. 71,380 (ex-showroom, Delhi). With this heavy price tag, this new offering happens to be the most expensive scooter in India. At the launch ceremony, the auto maker said that the company is planning to introduce few other models on the same lines.
The key highlights of Vespa VX include front disc brakes and tubeless tyres, which make it a upper segment model. Equipped with a 125 cc engine, the Vespa VX seems to be a good proportion with a decent level of power and torque output. However, it must be noted that until now, Piaggio was offering just one scooter in the Indian auto market, named Vespa LX.
Reportedly, in performance bike segment, the auto maker has introduced models like Moto Guzzi and Aprilia, and is now looking to grab a decent market share in India. Sources close to the development process stated that Piaggio Vehicles is mulling towards creating awareness for its top end models in the country and will then subsequently introduce a range of scooters and performance bikes. Presently, the Italian auto maker has a production potential of 150,000 units in the country and is eyeing to introduce third scooter by the end of 2013.
However, the company officials refused to share any details regarding the upcoming launch, but said that it will not square off against the models of Honda, Suzuki and Hero MotoCorp. Interestingly, all these three auto makers are considered to be the key players of the two wheeler market of Indian auto industry.
