Tata Motors has decided to add new safety features to its small car model Tata Nano. The new safety features are also available for customers who already own their cars and are interested in having them installed additionally. However, the company has issued a press release stating that it has not issued a mass recall of models already in the market. The safety feature is thus available for existing customers only if they wish the same to be installed in the car.

“Yes, customers have been informed. Some have been already recalled. We don’t know exactly how many vehicles will be recalled as we have to check how many Nanos have to be rectified,” said Tata Motors Managing Director ( India Operations) P M Telang.

“The company has taken up several corrective measures and will now offer cover tool on catalytic converter to prevent the car from catching fire. It will also install fuse in electrical components to avoid short circuits,” explained Tata Motors Group CEO and Managing Director Carl-Peter Forster.

A few Tata Nanos caught fire earlier, raising safety concerns about the car. In August, a sixth incident of a Nano catching fire happened since the car was commercially launched in March 2009. The company had dismissed them as stray incidents and refused to term them as any manufacturing defects. It claimed the car to be “completely safe.”
