Maruti Suzuki India stated that it shall phase out its most popular car Maruti 800 by the year 2016. Though many people speculate that the company may take the step due to the launch of Tata Nano, it is actually not true. The true reason for Maruti 800 to go off-market is the Euro IV norms that become effective in 2015-16.
"Once Euro-IV emission norms are applied across the country, which is likely to happen around 2015-16, then M800 and Omni may not be a salable product. We will have to eventually phase (them) out then," said MSI Chairman R C Bhargava. “We regularly introduce new models in the market, but at present there is no plan to bring out substitutes for these two cars,” he added
The company has refused to upgrade the base model of M800 which costs Rs. 1.93 lakh and Omni which fail to meet the emission norms that become effective in 2015-16. The phasing out exercise shall begin next year with 11 cities in India where Bharat Stage IV norms become effective. BS IV norms are equivalent to Euro IV norms that are prevalent in Europe. “In any case, we are selling very small numbers in these cities as they have opted for higher standard cars. Our main markets for the small car are the rural areas, where we will continue to sell,” Bhargava said.
