Based on government’s plans to go all-electric by 2030, major car manufacturers in the country have started working on electric vehicle development. Toyota Motors on the other hand has no immediate plans to introduce electric vehicles in India anytime soon. The company stated to media that it will rather wait for charging infrastructure development in the country. Even though major manufacturers in the country are working on developing one, the Indian auto-industry as a whole has given out mixed reactions to electrification.

In recent times, major players like Mahindra and Ford Motor Company have entered into partnership for three years with strong focus on electric car development for India. The country’s largest car manufacturer Maruti Suzuki is setting up its Lithium Ion battery manufacturing facility in India at a cost of Rs 1,200 crores. OEM suppliers like Denso and Toshiba will be assisting the company in making components for its electric car project. Moreover, engine-maker Cummins India is researching on electric mobility solutions for India, while Hyundai Motors has already started coordinating with its suppliers for electric car components.

In the international market, Toyota does sell electric vehicles and has all the technological know-how. Hence, it will not take too long for the Japanese car manufacturer to introduce electric cars in India once the charging infrastructure is well developed in the country.
