'We definitely want to introduce Leaf in India. I have already requested the Nissan headquarters to study the possibility of introducing Leaf in India,' Kiminobu Tokuyama, CEO, Nissan India was quoted saying to the press. However, the launch is not before 2012. Nissan is planning to launch its electric vehicles first in the US, Europe and Japan due to existing adequate infrastructural support.

India still needs to have proper infrastructure to make electric vehicles commercially viable. The global mass marketing (of the EVs) will start from 2012 but we are starting it in 2010 in Japan, US and Europe. Then we are going to ramp up. I think India will probably come at a later stage because of infrastructure, and infrastructure is very important," said Carlos Ghosn, Nissan Motors Chief Executive.

Nissan has reiterated that it looks at India and China as one of the most promising markets in Asia. It intends to expand its presence and increase its market share as well. Nissan has joint venture with Renault in India and both the companies have invested heavily in setting up a manufacturing unit near Chennai.
