The Japanese car maker, Nissan Motor, revived its Datsun brand to be launched in the emerging automotive markets and following the same, the car maker is planning to launch the Datsun brand in India on July 15, 2013. The head of Nissan, Carlos Ghosn, will be in India to launch the brand on domestic turf. With the Datsun brand, Nissan will be foraying into the entry level segment of cars in the country. Besides India, Datsun will be launched in other developing countries as well such as, South Africa, Indonesia and Russia.

Datsun will showcase its first small car on July 15, 2013 in its concept form in the country. This car, codenamed as K2, in all probabilities will make its global appearance at the 2014 Auto Expo to be held in 2014. The car will be designed in line of the Nissan Micra, however, it will be more compact than the Micra. It is expected that the model will boast of a capacious interior and will be able to accommodate four adults comfortably at a time. To be placed in the sub-4 lakh category, the new car will lock horns with the likes of Chevrolet Beat, Hyundai i10 and Chevrolet Spark, among others. The car will also be pitched against a plethora of hatchback from Maruti Suzuki in small and compact line-up like Swift, Alto and A-Star.

According to the sources, the K2 will come equipped with a petrol powertrain and the car maker has no plans to include a diesel variant to the line-up. However, this will not affect its competition as other cars in its segment like Eon, i10, Brio and Alto also do not come in diesel guise. To be designed on the V-Platform, the new car will share its mechanicals with the Nissan Micra. It is expected that the K2 will come with a price tag that is slightly lower than the low cost variant of the Micra.

The Indian automotive industry is one of its kind in the world, where there are inexpensive cars like Nano and the Alto. Now with the introduction of the K2 and Datsun brand, the Japanese car maker is planning to pose a competition to the likes of Maruti and Tata Motors. However, it depends on the preferences of the Indian market and its liking for the low cost cars, whether Datsun will bring success to Nissan or not.
