In recent times, the rise of compact Sports Utility Vehicles (SUVs) has left a lot of experts a bit surprised. Some are trying to figure out why this segment has seen a drastic rise in demand. On the other hand, some are raising a valid point by reasoning as to what took so long for car makers to realise the potential of this segment. The first premise, about the rise in demand, has a clear reasoning behind it. Compact SUVs provide the comfort of a sedan and the performance of a utility vehicle along with being affordable. In the modern day scenario, it is the best combination for a majority of buyers. The second point does not need to be stressed on too much as it is inconsequential at the moment. Till sometime back, the battle for top spot in this segment was between Renault Duster, Ford EcoSport and Mahindra Quanto. However, Nissan Terrano, Duster's sibling, entered the market sometime back.

While Renault Duster and Ford EcoSport have galloped ahead of the rest, Nissan Terrano is competing with Mahindra Quanto for the next best in the segment. Nissan, the Japanese firm, relatively new in the market, wants to increase its market share in India by capitalising on the rising demand of compact SUVs. On the other hand, Mahindra & Mahindra is a well-established firm that specialises in SUVs and its product portfolio includes the likes of Scorpio, Xylo, Bolero and XUV500. If one looks at things objectively, things are clearly in the favour of Mahindra Quanto. However, market dynamics and statistics have proved otherwise in the past, wherein newcomers have challenged big brands. Industry experts feel that despite the pedigree of Mahindra & Mahindra, Nissan Terrano has the potential to pose a serious challenge.

Mahindra Quanto is powered by a mCR100 engine that has a displacement of 1493 cc. This engine is mated to a 5-speed manual gearbox and is capable of generating an output of 100 bhp along with peak torque of 240 Nm. Exteriors of Quanto are stylish and feature sporty roof rails, body coloured bumper, bold grille and electric ORVMs. There are several utility features in Mahindra Quanto, such as power windows and steering, height adjustable driver's seat, integrated audio system and utility box. Safety on this compact SUV is ensured by Anti-lock Braking System (ABS), front airbags, Intellipark reverse assist and digital immobiliser.

Nissan Terrano has been one of the most hyped and talked about vehicles in recent times. Much has been made of its design, which is significantly different than Renault Duster. Terrano is a stylish vehicle that has a signature chrome front grille, silver finish roof rail and head lamps with 4 pod design. Unlike Quanto, Nissan Terrano comes in both petrol and diesel options, which gives it a slight advantage. Diesel version of Nissan Terrano is fitted with a 1.5-litre engine that churns out around 83 bhp of maximum power. On the other hand, petrol version of this compact SUV runs on a 1.6-litre powertrain, delivering an output of around 102 bhp.
