      Nissan sales rise 328% in April, Toyota faces slump

      On the back of Nissan’s low cost brand Datsun, the company has posted massive sales growth in the month of April. Nissan India reported a whopping rise in sales by 328% in the month of April 2014 at 5,301 units as compared to 1,239 units sold in the same time last year. Nissan’s low cost brand Datsun contributed more than 50% towards the April sales with 2691 units of GO hatchback sold in April. In future Nissan will introduce more vehicles under its low cost brand Datsun which includes a MPV. Speculations suggest that Datsun could also bring a sedan in the domestic market.

      Elated over the sharp rise in sales, Mr. Kenichiro Yomura– President, Nissan Group of India said, “We are witnessing an encouraging growth in our sales. We ended FY-13 on a high and have begun the new financial year with a healthy 328% year-on-year growth for the month of April. Our focus is to continue this trend going forward.”

      Nissan’s Japanese counterpart, Toyota’s Indian arm, Toyota Kirloskar Motor registered low sales at 8,328 in the month of April 2014 (including exports and domestic sales) as against 10,456 units sold in April 2013. Toyota India exported just a handful of Etios twin units to overseas markets. A total of 766 Etios Series were shipped to other markets from India. On the domestic front, company faced disappointment at 7.562 units juxtaposed to 9,007 units sold in April 2013.

      Commenting on the sluggish sales reported by Toyota India, Mr. N Raja, Director and Senior Vice - President, Sales and Marketing said “We resumed normal production on 22nd April and were carrying out limited operations until then. We thank our customers for their support and understanding during this difficult time. It is our endeavor to make the deliveries of vehicles on a timely basis.”

      Toyota is all set to launch new Etios Cross crossover in India, rumours are doing the rounds that Toyota could launch Etios Cross in the second week of May. Facelift version of Toyota Corolla Altis is also ready to be rolled out soon.
