Japanese carmaker Nissan shot to fame in the Indian market with its affordable Micra hatchback that was launched a couple of years ago. Recently, Nissan has launched the new facelifted version of its big-on-space sedan named Sunny. Nissan has been delivering cars in both petrol and a diesel alternative, but this time around, the carmaker has been reportedly planning to launch its internationally popular 'Leaf' electric car in India.

Speaking more on the idea, Andy Palmer, chief planning officer, Nissan Motor Corp said, “We are actively looking at the Leaf for India....I think there is a lot of potential for that car here, there is no doubt electric cars are the future. The product is there what we need is infrastructure. Charging is a big challenge. We are open to collaboration with local manufacturers on that. That is the fastest and easiest way of setting up charging stations.”

Currently Indian automaker Mahindra and Mahindra has been well known in this turf with their fleet of Reva electric cars. Nissan has been considering the Indian market seriously and has stated that it is open to collaboration with the local manufacturers who may assist with infrastructure support for electric cars which is indeed a primary reason for concern. Pawan Goenka, executive director and president, automotive, Mahindra and Mahindra said, “We are open to collaboration with any company that has a vision for electric vehicles in India.” Detailed engine specification and pricing aspect is not known for now and may only be known post an official announcement made by the company in this regard.
