Goverment of India recently rolled out its new policy, Fame India scheme under National Electric Mobility Mission Plan, to promote green cars in India. It has attracted many carmakers to bring in their electric or hybrid vehicles in the country. One such carmaker is Nissan, which might launch its popular all-electric car - the Leaf - in the Indian market. In fact, the company had showcased the Leaf in India last month.

Speaking to AutoCarpro, Sundararajan Krishnan, assistant chief vehicle engineer, Renault Nissan Technology & Business Centre India (RNTBCI) said, “The government’s positive signals are allowing us to run the clinic now. That’s the only reason why we have brought it (Nissan Leaf) to show you here”.

The Leaf has been one of the world's most successful pure electric cars. The company has managed to sell over 160,000 units of the electric car ever since its introduction. It is powered by a 80 kW motor that produces a peak torque of 240bhp. It is equipped with several advanced safety features such as anti-lock braking system with electronic brake-force distribution, six airbags, traction control and vehicle dynamic control. On full charge, the electric Leaf can run up to 135km. The second generation Leaf is expected to offer 400kms of range.

Guillaume Sicard, president of Nissan’s India operations said, “We need to partner with the government. In addition, we must ensure that the government and local municipal bodies are supportive in terms of charging infrastructure, taxes".
