The next generation will be launched in India tomorrow. Launched in 1972, this is the seventh generation for the mid-level premium sedan and was unveiled in 2016 globally. Codenamed G30, this car is BMW´s answer to the Mercedes-Benz E-Class, Volvo S90, Jaguar XF and the Audi A6.

Firstly, this new 5 Series takes its design cues from the latest generation 7 Series, which means that it gets the signature kidney grille, coupe-like silhouette and of course, those massive wrap around tail lamps which now have a wedge-like design to complete the overall look of the car. It’s a familiar story inside too with elements like the fully digital instrument cluster, BMW’s latest connected drive infotainment system and a black and beige cabin to complete the overall package. Fancy bits include gesture control, multi-zone climate control, leather seats and bits of shiny trim all around to boost the premium factor.

This new 5 Series is expected to be offered in the Indian market across two diesel and two petrol variants - the 520d, 530d, 520i and the 530i. The 520d and 520i make use of 2.0-litre four-cylinder engines while the 530i and 530d are powered by inline-six units. All engine options will be offered only with an eight-speed AT. Also included across the range will be multiple airbags and a suite of driver aids, both to assist in the driving process as well as in terms of safety equipment.

We expect that BMW will offer a range of exterior and interior trim packages including its famous M-sport body kit that adds some visually racy bits to the look of the vehicle. In terms of numbers, the 5 Series measures in 4.9-metres and has a wheelbase of 2.97 metres keeping it quite close to the E-Class LWB.

BMW has already begun assembling the car at its factory outside Chennai. Bookings have opened for the sedan and so, deliveries are expected to begin within a short while of the official launch. We believe that BMW will price the 5 Series in the range of Rs 55 lakhs to Rs 65 lakhs (ex-showroom).
