Indian automaker Mahindra revealed its plans of developing the next-generation Thar. The popular offroader from Mahindra was launched in 2010 and it received a mid-facelift back in 2015. Tried and tested for long time, the Thar has found a decent number of takers owing to a functional four-wheel drive with real off-roading capabilities. Apart from its own design team, the company will also rope-in design expertise from acquisitions like Pininfarina and Ssangyong.
Currently, the vehicle is available only with a 2.5-litre diesel engine that comes mated to a five-speed manual gearbox to generate 105bhp and 247Nm of torque. The vehicle is available in two wheel drive and four wheel drive options, where the all-wheel drive gets Borg Warner manual shift with low reduction gear. The car brags about the Drive by wire technology which helps for a quicker and better controlled throttle response. Reports indicate that there might be a new 1.5-litre petrol engine which might also be offered, though there are no confirmed reports on this yet.
As for now, details on the interior is also not available. However, we believe that the new Thar will get better upholstery and features which includes Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, wireless mobile charging and memory seats. The new model might also get intelligent and assisted driving function in future. The technologically advance model will help Mahindra strengthen its foothold in the Indian market.
