Mahindra and Mahindra is on an expansion spree in domestic as well as global market. The company has recently acquired South Korean SUV maker Ssangyong and is now set to become a global SUV leader. Now the company is planning to foray into the motorcycle segment and will be introducing its first bike by end-2011.

M&M is already selling gearless scooters in the Indian market and has recently acquired Kinetic brand as well. Currently Yamaha, Bajaj and Hero Honda are the leading market players and Hero Honda holds the supremacy in the market.

“We have achieved a milestone by selling one lakh scooters in just 10 months as against a set target of 18 months. Our plan now is to enter the motor-cycle market by end-this year,” said Anoop Mathur, Mahindra two-Wheelers’ president. “We are working on a unique product that will be assembled in the same plant where our scooters are manufactured,” he added. The company is creating the motor-cycle at its Italy-based Engines Engineering, which was purchased by the Mahindra group in 2008. Currently, it manufactures nearly 5-6 lakh scooters annually at its Pithampur unit near Indore, Madhya Pradesh.
