Honda is back with a new vigour in the Indian market. The company has revealed its near-production ready model of its new small car at the Thailand Auto Show. The model is going to be named as Honda Brio and is expected to be priced below Rs. 5 lakh in the Indian market.

The new Honda Brio will be powered by a 1.2L petrol engine and will compete with models like new Nissan Micra, Toyota Etios, Volkswagen Polo, Chevrolet Beat and old established models like Maruti Swift and Hyundai i10. “The new model is critical to our business in Asia,” said Takanobu Ito, the president & CEO of Honda Motor Company. The new Honda Brio has been developed to conform to Thailand’s Eco Car programme initiated by the government and meets strict emission norms and fuel efficiency targets.

In India, the Brio will be built at Honda Siel’s facility in Greater Noida where it has a 100,000-unit-a-year capacity. Currently, around 65 per cent of this location’s capacity is utilised to assemble the Jazz hatchback, City, Civic and Accord sedans. Honda Siel has a second plant in Tapukara in Rajasthan. It currently builds components for existing models and if Honda Brio picks up good numbers in India, this plant may be used to increase manufacturing capacity in India and for overseas markets. The model will hit Indian roads by early 2011.
