We had seen the preview to the Passat sedan at the 2016 Auto Expo in the form of the GTE, a plug-in hybrid version of the sedan. This upcoming sedan is the new-gen model based on the MQB platform. It gets a revolutionary design change over the model it will now replace. The latest Passat is 2mm shorter and has an extended wheelbase of 79mm. This means the carmaker has been able to carve out more space in the cabin and boot. The car is also lighter than the previous model by 80kg.

The 2017 VW Passat will be powered by a 175bhp 2.0-litre TDI diesel mill mated to their six-speed DSG automatic gearbox. There have been no confirmations about a petrol engine option or even manual transmission. However, the GTE plug-in hybrid in the global market gets a 113bhp electric motor and a 154bhp 1.4-litre turbocharged petrol unit. The combination produces a power output of 215bhp and 400Nm of torque, while VW has confirmed that this version qualifies for the EU 6 emission norms as well.

The German automaker had tested the new-gen Passat in our country for quite a long time. Now, the company has started its production at their Aurangabad plant. This sedan will compete against the Skoda Superb, Honda Accord and the Toyota Camry in the premium sedan segment in India.
