There is no questioning the fact that the new Audi A4 is a better proposition than what it replaces. Featuring a new exterior design, a massively improved cabin and lighter underpinnings, this next-gen model is fully armed to take on the likes of BMW 3 Series and Mercedes C-Class.

New Audi A4: 6 things you need to know

Here are six things you need to know about the new Audi A4.

      Evolutionary design

For some, the new A4 may not appear like an all-new generation model simply because of its evolutionary design. In typical Audi manner, the new car has been cleverly updated to help it differentiate from the old model. The fascia, for instance, gets a TT-inspired look and the whole front-end is a lot more angular than before as well. The cleanly styled rear-end may not be as striking but overall, the new A4 looks fresh and well-proportioned whichever way you look at it.

      Lighter than before

One of the many new highlights of this car is the way it has been conceived to save as much weight as possible. The new A4, in fact, is based on the MLB evo platform which adopts more lightweight materials in the vehicle’s construction. Audi says it has used a lot of magnesium for steering and gearbox components. Additionally, aluminium has also been used for the bonnet, doors and the boot lid. The end result is a weight loss of around 95kg over the old A4.

      New-age cabin

Perhaps the biggest change in the new A4 can be found inside the cabin which is fully new and packs in a lot more equipment than before. Audi has put its latest design trend to good use and as a result, the dashboard looks futuristic with all the horizontal surfacing, elegant wood finish and matt chrome bits. The old A4 had the least impressive interior in its class but with this new model, Audi has made a grand comeback.

      Feature list

The new A4 is available in two trim levels. The higher-spec trim gets Audi’s brilliant virtual cockpit, MMI system with a touchpad, three zone climate control, sunroof, wireless charging, powered front seats, electronic parking brake, reversing camera with front and rear parking sensors, ABS, ESP and 8 airbags and lots more as standard.

      No diesel option

Rather surprisingly, Audi is initially offering the A4 with just the 1.4-litre turbo petrol motor. A diesel powered alternative will be launched at a later stage. Now even though it’s a smaller displacement unit, the 1.4-litre petrol engine is turbocharged and develops impressive power figures of 148bhp and 250Nm. It’s paired to an equally modern 7-speed dual clutch automatic gearbox.

      Price and competition

The A4 is available in two trim levels – Premium Plus and Technology. The Premium Plus trim is priced at Rs 38.10 lakh whereas the Technology trim costs Rs 41.20 lakh. In comparison, prices for the BMW 320i start at Rs 36.90 lakh while Mercedes sells the C-Class petrol in a single fully specced trim called the C200 for Rs 42.69 lakh.
