The leading automobile manufacturer Tata Motors is working on launching its new model Tata Pelican the very next year i.e. 2016. According to the sources, this new model is just an upgraded version of Nano. Just to bring back some memories, Tata Motors is the manufacturer of the famous and the least expensive car – Nano. This decision of the company is a very smart move to compete against the Maruti Suzuki Alto 800, which in itself is a quite famous car. So, time for a detailed review about this new ‘to – be’ competitor.

Tata Pelican is based on X302, which is a slightly modified version of Nano platform. Expected to be the cheapest diesel powered car, this newcomer would be available in both petrol and diesel engine options. So, there is no need for you to panic if you are a petrol car lover.

The engine framework for this new auto would also be a little different and, of course, more powerful than that of Nano. The new model is expected to have 3-cylinder, - 1.0 litre petrol engine and a 0.8 litre diesel powered engine. An interesting fact to be included here is that this is the very same diesel engine which was proposed for Nano but was later on dropped as it would have increased the price of the ‘then – new’ model.

While Nano did get a never earned hyphenated tag of “the-cheapest-car-in-existence-which-you-must-try”, it still couldn’t replace the high post occupied by Maruti’s Alto. The new ‘Tata Pelican’ now appears to be yet another try from Tata Motors to defeat Alto. This model will also compete with Hyundai Eon. This automobile competition will surely be very beneficial to Indian customers. Best cars at the most reasonable price and that also with a famous brand name, what more can one expect?

As for the price tag, the figure will likely begin from Rs. 2.5 lakh. For a brief history lesson, Tata Nano has a 624 cc, 2 – cylinder petrol engine with 38 PS peak power and 51 Nm maximum torque. The price for Nano starts from Rs. 2.16 lakh.

Pelican would be accompanied with its new series brothers, Tata Kite hatch and Tata Kite sedan and will be a part of the automaker’s new Tata HorizonNext series. The series also includes some new compact SUV’s, one of which will be based on Tata Nexon’s concept.

If going by the technology present in Tata’s recent launches – Zest and Bolt, customers can expect a better design, advanced features and classy quality – the fields where Nano seemed to lag.

The main question in everyone’s mind is whether this new ‘small–car’ brings a fortunate turn in the present and future of Tata Motors. The company has recently experienced a fall in its car sales in the year 2014. It is easy to see that the firm has a bet a lot on this new model. Now it is totally up to the Indian automobile market to decide the future of Tata and the newbie Pelican. Will it be successful in defeating Alto and Eon or will it be a back-to-back failure for the manufacturer? Keep thinking!
