Honda fanboys swear by Mugen, for the sole reason that they build the maddest Hondas in the world. Tokyo Auto Salon, one of the top platforms globally for tuned and modified wheels, certainly demanded a special form Mugen - the Mugen Honda Civic Type R.

The Civic Type R is a cult car, a Japanese domestic market (JDM) special that is known for its performance worldwide. Mugen took this already-crazy looking production car to build a custom car that can drive its way straight into the World Touring Car Championship (WTCC) arena.

The Mugen Type R gets front and side skirts, a wide body kit with side scoops, a more aggressive front bumper and a bigger rear wing. Imposing as they look, all the aerodynamic aids are functional and just for the aesthetics. The quad exhausts have been ditched for a single pipe in the middle – a trend in Japanese customisation circles.

While no pictures of the interiors are available yet, the Type R will certainly get the Mugen Racing seats, a sporty steering wheel and a bunch of fancy additions to the cabin. But what interests us most, is what runs under the hood. While Mugen is tight-lipped about its details, it certainly will be better the 306bhp setup of the 2.0-litre inline four turbocharged petrol engine.
