Japanese car maker Mitsubishi has not yet entered the small car segment of the Indian market but that premise, according to reports, is set to change in a couple of years of time. The launch of Pajero automatic saw an important announcement on Mitsubishi’s part and the firm elucidated its plans for the Indian market post 2015. Notably, Mitsubishi’s contract with Hindustan Motors expires at the end of 2015 and the firm has certain things planned when that happens. New Sports Utility Vehicles (SUVs) are set to enter the market along with a couple of contact car models. Though SUVs to be launched in India have not been named by Mitsubishi, the small cars that will be introduced are Attrage and Mirage.

Rumours regarding the launch of these models have been doing rounds for some time now and generated a certain level of hype as well. The introduction of these models, however, has reportedly been extended to 2016. Mitsubishi Mirage, when launched in India, will compete in a tough segment that already features highly successful models like Hyundai Grand i10 and Maruti Suzuki Swift. The Attrage, on the other hand, is a sedan that will compete with Nissan Sunny and Toyota Etios.

Both these models will feature a 1.2-litre engine capable of developing an output of 77 BHP and a torque level of 100 Nm. Standard versions of Mirage and Attrage will come with a five-speed manual transmission system and an automatic option is likely to be added. If the cars manage to do well, Mitsubishi might be tempted to launch diesel versions too.

The end of Mitsubishi’s contract will usher a new beginning for the Japanese brand and it is concentrate its manufacturing process in the south Indian state of Tamil Nadu. One of the main aims of the manufacturer in the next few years will be to expand its dealership network.
