Mercedes-Benz has trademarked a new pedestrian airbag tech which cushions the impact to pedestrians. As per reports, these airbags are installed in the A-pillars. When the sensors are set off in the event of a crash, the edge of the hood that’s next to the windscreen moves upwards. While this happens, the airbags inflate from the A-pillars.

Sources add that these airbags are placed in a fabric tube which is then masked using a cover. The design of this airbag is such that on inflation the airbag lines up with the bonnet when it moves upwards. Mercedes believes that serious fatalities related to pedestrian collision can be avoided with its use.

Although Mercedes-Benz filed for the patent in 2015, it was only published earlier this month by the U.S. Patent office. Sources suggest that this technology may make it to production cars sooner than the industry expects. Meanwhile, Porsche patented a new A-pillar airbag that keeps a convertible’s occupants safe in the event of a crash.
