Mercedes-Benz India, the German luxury automotive marque, has decided to discontinue its R-Class premium Multi Purpose Vehicle (MPV) in the domestic as well as global auto markets soon. The latest development is believed to be on the back of slow sales and weak demand witnessed by the company. Mercedes-Benz R-Class is assembled at the German auto maker's Tuscaloosa facility in Alabama, USA and is available in the country as Completely Built Units (CBUs).

Positioned between M-Class and GL-Class models, the seven-seater R-Class is a luxurious MPV and is available in two trim options in the Indian auto market. The R350 4MATIC is powered by a 3.5 litre V6 petrol powertrain, whereas the R350 CDI 4MATIC uses a 3.0 litre V6 diesel oil burner. These R-Class models are available in India with price tags between Rs. 61 lakh and Rs. 71 lakh. The luxury MPV saw its sales dwindling recently, despite being trimmed with several top-of-the-line features. The Mercedes-Benz R-Class' high price tag is pegged to be the reason for its low demand, as most customers tend to go towards the Audi Q7 and the GL-Class for their better value-for-money.

As per reports, it may be some time before the next generation R-Class model arrives at the Indian shores. Further, Mercedes-Benz India recently rolled out its new GL-Class model with a price close to Rs. 77 lakh, and is currently readying itself for the launch of its much awaited A-Class premium hatchback range scheduled on May 30, 2013.
