The Mercedes-Benz G-Class has a strong record spanning over three decades. The new model will not lose on its iconic look and character, but will be enhanced to offer more space, better stability and premium upholstery. The new model will also be lighter in weight and offer better efficiency than the current generation.

Under the hood, the new model is expected to be powered by a new 3.0-litre, in-line six-cylinder petrol (codenamed M256) expected to generate 360bhp of power and diesel (codenamed OM656) which generates 300bp of power. The powerful engines will come mated to a nine-speed 9G-Tronic automatic gearbox.

Reports indicate that the German automaker will be using more of aluminium for the structure and also increasing the width by 100mm thereby taking it to about 1860mm. The reports further indicate that the kerb weight of the vehicle might be reduced by 200kgs which will prove to be useful on a vehicle that currently weighs about 2570kg. To help with better stability and handling, the new model will get a three or four-link set-up for the front suspension and latest electro-mechanical steering system. As for safety, the new model will get more driver assistance and other modern safety equipment. Globally, it will debut in 2018 and it is to be seen if India can turn out to be one of its potential markets.
