The Indian arm of Mercedes-Benz, a well-appreciated and globally renowned German luxury automotive marque, will introduce the much awaited A-Class premium hatchback range in the domestic passenger car market by the end of June 2013. The Mercedes-Benz A-Class will arrive in both petrol and diesel powered options with an introductory sub-Rs. 20 lakhs price tag, thereby making it the cheapest ‘Three Pointed Star’ available on Indian turf.

As per reports, the German automotive major will be pitching its yet-to-be launched A-Class hatchback range below its B-Class Sports Tourer models that were introduced in domestic auto market during October 2012. At present, the B-Class models are the cheapest offerings in the Mercedes-Benz’s Indian product portfolio. The stunning premium hatch comes within a price tag of Rs. 21 lakhs to Rs. 24 lakhs in the country. Hence, the upcoming Mercedes-Benz A-Class fleet is expected to bear introductory price tag close to Rs. 18 lakhs for the base trim.

Speaking at the sidelines of the unveiling of Mercedes-Benz Research and Development India (MBRDI) centre in Bangalore, Eberhard H. Kern, Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer (CEO), Mercedes-Benz India, was quoted as saying, “Since India is primarily a diesel car market, we will also be launching the diesel variant of our B-class car in June.”

Affirming that that the company overestimated the demand for its luxury range of automobiles in the Indian auto market, Dr. Thomas Weber, Board Member of Daimler AG and responsible for Group Research and Mercedes-Benz Cars Development, was quoted as saying “So far, we had concentrated on bringing only the C-class and upward, car models to India, and therefore, missed out on the big opportunity in the premium class segment.” Last year, Mercedes-Benz India sold of 7,138 units in the country.
