Mercedes-Benz India, the German luxury car maker, has finally launched the diesel version of its its B-Class premium hatchback in the domestic car market. With a price tag of Rs. 22.60 lakh (ex-showroom, Mumbai), the launch of a new model has been targeted to consolidate the position of three pointed star in India. It must be noted that the auto maker has already delivered 500 units of its B-Class petrol model since its launch, somewhere around nine months back. With this impressive response, the company is expecting that the diesel version will outsell its petrol guise in a couple of months and will come up with a double digit growth by the end of 2013 for the car maker.

It must be noted that the Mercedes-Benz has offered only one variant of its diesel model, B 180 CDI, which is equipped with a 2.2 litre four-cylinder engine. The maximum torque churned out by the engine of this model stands at 250 Nm at 1400-2800 rpm, facilitating it to clock a top speed of 190 Kmph. According to company claims, the 2013 B 180 CDI covers a distance of 18.98 kmpl. Also, the senior officials of Mercedes-Benz India said that the new B-Class Diesel happens to be a perfect combo of a sedan and Sports Utility Vehicle (SUV), as it features a drive quality of the former and the utility of latter.

The key highlights of newly launched B-Class Diesel include Intelligent Assistance Systems and SLS AMG INSPIRED 7G-DCT gearbox with paddle shift, which has been inspired from the SLS AMG and is quite unique in the luxury hatchback segment of the Indian auto market. Also, the company has introduced a new interior trim in B 180 CDI, Brown Burr Walnut with satin finish, which adds to its luxury quotient.

At the launch ceremony, the Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer of Mercedes Benz India, Eberhard Kern was of a view that the domestic buyers are still demanding diesel models, despite the fact that the price gap between petrol and diesel is continuously reducing. “In our portfolio where diesel variant is available, it constitutes 80% of our total sales with petrol making up for 20% with the B Class too we are expecting the same. The launch of B Class Diesel is a continuation of Mercedes Benz India's product offence for 2013. The response for the B-Class petrol has been encouraging and we are confident that the new B-Class diesel will add to the demand of the car, with its new improved efficient engine, stylish characteristics and unique touring capabilities,” he added later.
