Mercedes Benz India has retained its top position in the Indian market once again looking at the July sales figures in India. Last year, BMW beat Mercedes to become India’s top luxury brand but with new models launching and better market penetration in tier-II and Tier III cities, Mercedes sales have once again gained momentum in the market.

According to the latest figures released by SIAM, Mercedes sold 2921 units from Jan-Jul 2010 as compared to 1629 units sold in the same period last year. On the other hand, BMW sold 2718 units in Jan-Jul 2010. Mercedes is working on expanding its dealerships across India by reaching out to smaller cities or India.

Mercedes Benz is also planning to introduce more models in the Indian car market. "We have mapped various segments and will be launching new models in the vacant slots. The company will be launching a luxury sports utility vehicle (SUV) and models under performance segment. In the last seven months we have launched 16 products," Director (Sales and Marketing) Debashis Mitra.

Mercedes is also planning to strengthen its financing arm to facilitate purchasing of its new and used car models by customers in India.
