The Indian auto giant Maruti Suzuki, which has a strong hold in the small car segment, is now looking forward to showcase its concept sports utility vehicle at the upcoming Delhi International Auto Expo in the month of January 2012. As per the unconfirmed media reports, the new Maruti SUV will be developed independently by the Maruti’s R&D team in India, without taking help of its Japanese parent Suzuki Motors. The decision of developing an SUV by Maruti can be seen as a bid of the country’s largest car maker to capitalize on the increasing demand of SUV’s in the Indian auto market.

The production version of this concept SUV is expected to hit the Indian roads by year 2013-14, as the model is currently in the initial stage of its development. So far, the company has kept quite on the engine details of this SUV. However, the specification and other details of the SUV are expected to be revealed at the upcoming 2012 Delhi Auto Expo, where the company will uncover its concept version.

At present, the SUV segment in India is dominated by the leading auto makers like Mahindra & Mahindra and Tata Motors. The SUV segment in India is expected to grow over 100 percent in the coming years. At present, SU segment accounts for 7 to 8 percent of the overall passenger vehicle segment of 2.5 million units in the country.
