Maruti Suzuki India Limited, the country’s largest passenger car maker, has been selling the Swift hatchback in India for the past 8 years. Ever since its launch, this vehicle has ruled the roost in the premium hatchback, despite formidable competitors. Interestingly, by now, 30 lakh units of the Swift have been sold across global markets by the auto maker. To celebrate this special occasion, a special edition of the vehicle, known as the Maruti Swift Star has been launched by Maruti Suzuki. Reportedly, of the 30 lakh units sold, 13 per cent were sold in Japan, 45 per cent in India and 23 per cent in Europe.

Many extra add-ons have been given to the new Swift Star. Features include art leather seat covers, a 2 DIN stereo with Bluetooth compatibility, designer mats, rear roof spoiler and a pair of speakers. However, these accessories can be fitted in the market easily. This edition of the Swift will only be fitted with the diesel engine (DDIS), which is the 1.3 litre Fiat Multijet. Two engines of Swift are available in the Indian market, namely the 1.4 litre K-series petrol variant which produces 85 bhp of power and the 1.3 litre Multijet diesel engine with 74 bhp of peak power output. The car is very popular for its peppy engine and sporty styling. Every user is known to enjoy driving the Maruti Swift, whether diesel or petrol.

The Swift has also been winning numerous awards over the years. It was titled as the ‘Indian Car of the Year’ for 2006. The car was also awarded for ‘Best Design and Styling by SNBC TV18 Autocar’ and by NDV Profit Car India for being the ‘India Automobile of the year’ during 2006. In 2010, Maruti Swift won the ‘Total Customer Satisfaction Survey’ by TNS Automobile. Despite a slowdown in the Indian automobile industry, the Swift still continues to sell in very high numbers. It sells at a ratio of 3:1 to its closest rival, the Hyundai i20. Industry experts are of a view that the demand of this car will be unaffected by the muted Indian auto market conditions.
