The leading passenger car manufacturer of India, Maruti Suzuki India Limited is stemming up its ante in the small car segment. The scheduled launch of WagonR Stingray is seen as a deliberate move made the company in order to safeguard its market share from arch-rival Hyundai, which is also brining in a new model named Grand i10. Amid the recent slowdown in the auto sector of India, car markers are now infusing new strategies in order to increase their sales and capture a sizeable portion of the market share. This claim is evident from the fact that major auto makers like Hyundai Motors and Maruti Suzuki are bringing in new models based on the platform of existing ones, a tactic that was not practised before.

Maruti Suzuki's latest offering will offer direct competition to Hyundai's Grand i10, which is all set to launch in the upcoming days. As speculated, Stingray will be equipped with the same 1.0-litre K-series engine, which powers the existing WagonR. Reportedly, the car will roll out in a petrol variant with tuned options of 67 bhp of peak power and 90 Nm of maximum torque. On the other hand, Hyundai Grand i10 shall be provided with more powerful 1.1-litre Kappa dual engine, which will have a maximum power of 83 bhp. Another added advantage of Grand i10 shall be the availability of a diesel engine as compared to Stingray, which might end up having a petrol engine during the initial stages.

Coming to features, Stingray will have steering mounted audio controls while there is a distinct possibility of Bluetooth connectivity being provided in its higher end variant. On the other hand, Hyundai Grand i10 shall be equipped with best-in-class features like rear air conditioning vents and push star/stop button. Undoubtedly, the Grand i10 has an edge over Maruti Suzuki Stingray.

Currently as of now, WagonR Stingray is available in the Japanese car market and has enjoyed an overwhelming success there. However, the main test for the company will be in the Indian car market owing to the challenge posted by arch-rival Hyundai, which is constantly posing a threat to Maruti Suzuki's supremacy. The one aspect that shall work in favour of Stingray can be attributed to its pricing, which is expected to be around Rs. 4.5 lakh for the base variant. The price is much less than Hyundai Grand i10, which is expected to roll out at a much higher price.

Industry experts are of a view that with both Hyundai and Maruti Suzuki planning to infuse new blood in the competitive small car segment, the war over becoming the market segment leader seems to be never ending.
