The Maruti Suzuki Vitara Brezza is currently only available in diesel power with prices starting from Rs 6.99 lakh (ex-showroom Delhi). However, later on in the year, Maruti Suzuki is also expected to launch a petrol variant which will be powered by the 1.0-litre BoosterJet engine.

This turbocharged 996cc petrol motor produces 110bhp and 170Nm of torque. It is likely to be offered with a five-speed manual and possibly even the CVT from the Baleno. The Vitara Brezza will be the second car to get this engine after the Baleno RS.

This engine seems to serve the right purpose for Maruti Suzuki as it is more powerful than the 1.2-litre petrol engine powering cars like the Swift, Dzire and Ritz. It also fits perfectly under compact car regulations thanks to its size. Lastly, this engine is also a direct match for Ford’s EcoBoost petrol motor which produces 124bhp and around 170Nm of torque.

Reports suggest that Maruti Suzuki is likely to import the engine in the initial batches and may start local production only when there are sufficient volumes. It means the BoosterJet variant is likely to be offered in the mid-level variants in a bid to keep the price competitive.
