Maruti Suzuki is planning to introduce a Swift Sport in the Indian automobile market. However, customers will not get the Swift loaded with M16A 1.6 L, petrol engine due to heavy import duties, which will make it as costly as the BMW X1. The company may either introduce the Swift with a 1.4 L petrol engine used in the Ertiga MPV or with the 1.6 L engine of the SX4.

The company wants to target the ‘semi hot hatchback’, which includes the Skoda Fabia 1.6 and Volkswagen Polo 1.6 with the Swift Sport. Both these vehicles share the engine, which generates 103 bhp of maximum power and 153 Nm of peak torque. Like both these cars, the Maruti Suzuki Swift Sport headed to India will have 5 doors, rather than the 3 door version of the car sold in the international market.

The Swift Sport with SX4's 1.6 L motor will be capable of delivering peak power of 102 bhp and highest torque of 145 Nm, which will make it a good option for Indian buyers. However, speculation is rife that the car will eventually come to the country with the 1.4 L engine. If the company aims to give stiff competition to the two rivals, then its power output will have to match theirs. Maruti will have to bear high costs if it intends to tune the 1.4 L engine to produce more than 100 bhp of power.

Along with the new and powerful engine, the Swift Sport will probably receive a body kit, stiffer suspension, bigger brakes, Traction Control System (TCS) and cosmetic changes that will set it apart from the current version. Auto enthusiasts in India have been looking forward to a more stylish version of Swift since its launch in the country. They will also be hoping for add-ons like rear disc brakes, aesthetic changes rather than stickers as well as a suitable body kit.

In order to give stiff competition to the likes of Polo 1.6 and Fabia 1.6, the company will have to ensure that its cost is affordable. Therefore, buyers can expect a price tag of around Rs. 7 to 8 lacs for the new Maruti Suzuki Swift Sport.
