Maruti Suzuki India Limited, the country's largest passenger car maker, is on cloud nine as its best selling Alto small car has been outsmarted by none other than Swift DZire in terms of sales in the domestic car market. The entry level sedan outsold its little hatchback sibling by 854 units last month, after remaining the company's second best selling model for months in the country.

Expressing his views on Swift DZire displacing Alto on top of the sales charts, Mayank Pareek, Chief Operating Officer (COO), Marketing and Sales at Maruti Suzuki India Limited, was quoted as saying, “DZire is proving us right. We had perceived five years ago the demand for compact sedan would be strong enough with customers propelling it in their pursuit to upgrade to bigger cars, which led to the creation of this new car that has emerged as such a strong product.”

At present, Swift DZire is the undisputed champion of the entry level sedan segment of the Indian auto market. The compact sedans represent the fastest growing category of vehicles (in terms of sales) in the country and has risen by 21 per cent during the last fiscal, recording sales in excess of 2 lakh units. Interestingly, sales recorded by the entire automobile sector declined by 7 per cent. The Maruti Suzuki DZire model is pitched against Honda Amaze, Tata Indigo eCS, Chevrolet Sail, Toyota Etios and Mahindra Verito in the entry level sedan segment.

Industry experts have opined that increase in domestic sales of Swift DZire would augment Maruti Suzuki India's growth margins and overall profitability by leaps and bounds. This is because Swift DZire is available in a price band of Rs. 5 to 7 lakhs, while the entry level small car Alto range carries retail values close to Rs. 3 lakhs. Lately, the company recorded sales of 15,000 units of its Swift DZire on an average per month that have even peaked to more than 17,000 units. At present, the pending order book for Swift DZire stands at 27,000 units in the country.

Expressing his views on the outstanding success story of Swift DZire in India, Motilal Oswal, senior analyst at a Mumbai-based brokerage firm, was quoted as saying, “It is one product that is defying market conditions. Even as most models are declining, the DZire has continued to hold pole position, making it the largest-selling car. It could have been impacted by the Amaze, but Honda's limited production capacity of 5,000 units/month could not affect its demand.”
