Maruti Suzuki has hinted about considering a crossover body style for the next-gen Alto. The Renault Kwid's success has been the major reason for the automaker to revise their strategy for the entry-level hatchback.

Though the design and body style of the upcoming Alto has not been finalised yet, Maruti Suzuki is considering a tall boy crossover avatar of the Alto. This new Alto might only see the light of the day sometime in 2018, but should be a good counter measure to the Kwid.

With its sporty and aggressive looks, the Kwid makes an interesting option for Indian buyers. Its good looks, new features and affordable pricing has helped the company achieve good sales numbers. In fact, this entry-level hatchback has also become the game-changer for Renault.

The small car category of cars accounts for one-fifth of the total of 5.5 lakh units in India and is a price sensitive segment. Since the 'sporty' proposition is trending a lot in the Indian car market, every manufacturer is intending to have a product catering to this demand. This is also the reason why Maruti Suzuki's new products are also moving towards this trend. Maruti's upcoming product in this category will be the Ignis crossover, but in the sub-Rs 6 lakh bracket.
