Fiscal Year (FY) 2012-13 was a mixed bag for Maruti Suzuki India (MSI), the country’s biggest car manufacturer. The company witnessed a downfall of 4.8 per cent in its sales during the month of March 2013. It sold a total of 1,19,937 vehicles (including exports) during March, as compared to 1,25,952 units sold in the same month last year. On the other hand, the car maker reported a 3.3 per cent year-on-year growth for the FY 2012-13 with 11,71,434 units sold against 11,33,695 in 2011-12. While domestic sales declined by 4.3 per cent in March this year (1,07, 890 vehicles against 1,12,724 units in March 2012), exports also fell a whopping 8.9 per cent (12,047 units compared to 13,228 units last year). Similarly, overall exports decreased too by 5.5 per cent with a figure of 1,20,388 units, down from 1,27,379 units in 2011-12. However, as a sliver lining, domestic sales of FY 2012-13 went up by 4.3per cent to 10,51,046 units, as opposed to 10,12,724 units in the last fiscal.

Commenting on the varying figures, Mayank Pareek, Chief Operating Officer (COO), Marketing and Sales, Maruti Suzuki India, said, "On a year-on-year comparison, yes we are down this March, but on a sequential basis this is the highest sales in the last 12 months. Perhaps the market has bottomed out and we might see little bit of recovery around second quarter this fiscal." Other manufacturers such as Tata Motors and Ford India have also witnessed considerable decline in numbers during FY 2012-13.

Last month also witnessed a decline in sales volume of MSI’s passenger cars with 91,896 units sold, which is 6.9 per cent down from 98,570 cars sold in the year-ago period. However, the overall sales of FY 2012-13 witnessed a marginal rise of 0.7 per cent with 8,61,337 vehicles delivered as compared to 8,55,730 units sold in previous fiscal. Mini segment passenger car (M800, A-Star, Alto and WagonR) volumes were down by 14.7 per cent at 45,047 units, compared to 52,826 vehicles in March 2012. The dip in March 2013 sales continued in the compact segment, comprising Swift, Ritz and Zen Estilo, as well with 25,868 cars sold that is 7.3 per cent less than 27,913 units delivered in same month during 2012.

Once again, a positive sign was witnessed in the entry level sedan and Utility Vehicle segments. Market leader Swift Dzire zoomed up by 22 per cent this March, selling 20,078 against 16,451 nos. sold in same period of last year. On the other hand, the SX4 mid size sedan slumped by massive 40.6 per cent as Maruti Suzuki India managed to sell only 903 units in March 2013, whereas in same period last year 1,520 SX4s were sold. Utility Vehicles like Gypsy, Grand Vitara and Ertiga witnessed a swell of 4 times in their sales from 1,530 units sold in March 2012 to 6,488 units in March 2013. Analysing the above figures, industry experts feel that it may be a rocky ride for the country’s passenger vehicle leader this year.
