Maruti Suzuki India Limited (MSIL), the country's largest passenger car manufacturer, has been felicitated with the esteemed and revered '2012 Golden Peacock Award' towards celebrating its sustainability initiatives in the automobile sector. The revelation came through a senior MSIL official, at the company's Gurgaon premises on October 20, 2012.

According to a MSIL Spokesperson, the 2012 Golden Peacock honour was received by S. Y. Siddiqui, Chief Operating Officer (COO), Administration Department of Maruti Suzuki in United Kingdom (UK). The honouring gesture took place in a special award ceremony at the global sustainability and corporate governance convention, which took place in London between October 10 and 13, 2012.

Further, it was Eric Pickles, Secretary of State for Communities, United Kingdom, who presented Siddiqui with the prestigious award for excellence in the company's sustainability operations. The ceremony was also presided by the ex Prime Minister of Sweden, Ola Ullsten and J. S. Ahluwalia, who represented as Chairman of the Institute of Directors (India) as its top official.

The Golden Peacock Awards have been awarded since 1992 and it was the Institute of Directors (IOD), which came up with the general idea behind the honours. The elementary concept behind the awards is to present a token of appreciation for firms who leave their mark throughout the world in terms of success, quality and corporate excellence.

There are three global award categories - Golden Peacock Global Award for Sustainability (GPGAS), Golden Peacock Global Award for Excellence in Corporate Governance (GPGAECG) and Golden Peacock Global Award for Corporate Social Responsibility (GPGACSR).

The winner of GPGAS is evaluated on the receptiveness of an organisational strategy devised by a corporate firm towards catering to the requirements of its different stakeholders, formulation of innovative partnership plans towards social responsibility along with the integration of sustainable development problems with corporate operations.
