India’s largest automaker Maruti Suzuki has been ruling the roost in the hatchback segment. Fuel efficient, wide service network and low cost of ownership have been the key factors for the carmaker’s success in India. In coming months, the automaker will be introducing three models – Baleno RS, MarutiIgnis and the Swift AMT.

Maruti Suzuki Swift has been a popular name with its presence in the Indian market for over a decade now. The fairly powerful hatchback has always been offered with a five speed manual transmission option in petrol and diesel guise. However, owing to the growing demand for cars with Auto Gear Shift (AGS) technology, the company might soon introduce the AMT option in the Swift as well. But then, the 4-speed automated manual transmission sourced from MagnetiMarelli will only be offered in diesel guise. It will continue to be powered by the existing 1.3-litre DDiS diesel engine which generates 74bhp of power and 190Nm of maximum torque. The AMT option in Swift is likely to be launched during the festive season this year.It may be priced between Rs 6 – 7.5 lakh and will compete against the Hyundai Grand i10 and the Honda Brio in India.

The recently launched Baleno hatchback is a premium offering from the Indian automaker which is exclusively sold via the Nexa outlets. Car fans in the country have been eagerly waiting for the more powerful Baleno RS model powered by a 1.0-litre BoosterJet direct injection turbo petrol engine to be introduced in the country. It is believed that the powerful Baleno variant will only be offered in the top-spec Alpha trim and might generate about 112bhp of power and 175Nm of torque. The Baleno RS will compete against the likes of Fiat AbarthPunto and the Volkswagen Polo GT. As for the pricing aspect, it might be priced between Rs 8 – 9 lakh.

The upcoming Maruti Ignis will be sold via the Nexaagain. Owing to the growing popularity of cars with AMT option, the upcoming Ignis from Maruti Suzuki will also get an AMT option at launch. The vehicle will be launched early in 2017 and will be offered with a 1.2-litre petrol engine and a 1.3-litre diesel engine option. As for safety, the new vehicle will get driver and passenger airbags, and ABS with EBD as standard. The five seat vehicle is expected to be priced between Rs 5 lakh – 7 lakh and compete against the Mahindra KUV100 in India.
