Maruti Suzuki, the biggest car manufacturer of India, has announced that it will launch its first Multi Purpose Vehicle (MPV) Ertiga on April 12, 2012 at an event in New Delhi. The model will contend against the likes of Toyota Innova and Mahindra Xylo for market share and will be available in a total of six variants and seven colour schemes. Reportedly, the company will launch three each of diesel and petrol variants of the model in the country; the base model will be priced under Rs. 10 lacs.

According to Mayank Pareek, Managing Executive Officer - Sales and Marketing at Maruti, "Ertiga's first focus is India. Later on, we may look at introducing the vehicle in ASEAN countries like Indonesia.”

The company has assimilated the diesel and petrol variants of the model with 1.3 L DDiS and 1.4 L K-series K-14 engines, respectively. Ertiga's petrol variant will deliver decent mileage of 16.02 kmpl, while its diesel variant would provide mileage of 20.77 kmpl. As compared to the Innova and Xylo, which are 4.5 m long, Ertiga will take up lesser parking space due to its 4.2 m frame. Its three row flexi-seating option will offer sufficient space to 8 passengers due to the 2x3x2 structuring.

Maruti Suzuki endeavours to capture a share of the booming Utility Vehicle (UV) segment of the India auto industry, which is growing at the rate of 15 per cent. Currently, the segment accounts for 14 per cent of the share of Indian passenger car market, with approximately 30,000 vehicles sold on a monthly basis. The success of Ertiga will revive the manufacturer's fortunes as it is still suffering from setbacks like lower Year over Year (YoY) sales, decreasing market share and increasing competition in the small car segment.
