It has been a well known fact that Maruti Suzuki and Hyundai Motors India have been tough rivals on Indian soil. Until now, the Elite i20 from Hyundai has been facing stiff competition from Maruti's Swift, but then owing to its impressive styling and features, the Elite i20 scored brownie points over the fast aging Swift. This time around the newcomer Baleno from Maruti's production line is all geared up to take competition at an equal footing.

In terms of engine, the Hyundai Elite i20 gets a 1.2 litre 4-cylinder petrol engine and a 1.4-litre diesel engine option. The petrol variant mated to five-speed manual gearbox generates about 82bhp of power with 115Nm of torque, while the diesel variant mated to a six-speed manual transmission generates about 89bhp of power with about 220Nm of torque. The new Maruti Baleno shall be offered with 1.2litre petrol engine that generates about 83 bhp of power and 115 Nm or torque, while the diesel variant would be powered by 1.3-litre DDiS that generates about 74 bhp of power and 190Nm of torque. In terms of mileage, Baleno claims 21.4km/l in petrol, while the diesel claims 27.39km/l. The Elite i20 on the other hand claims 18.6km/l in petrol and 22.54km/l in diesel.

In terms of features, both the cars lock horns, as they get almost the same features. The hatchbacks share common features like AUX and USB connectivity, touchscreen infotainment system, Bluetooth, rear camera, two airbags, ABS and climate control. Though the Elite i20 gets automatic headlamps, the Baleno takes a lead with features like Apple CarPlay and standard features like Dual airbags and EBD across variants.

Speaking on the exterior design, though the Elite i20 scores slightly better owing to the company's aggressive design philosophy, the Maruti Baleno also carries a mature and bold stance. Though Baleno does not have that aggressive appeal, it does look fresh owing to newer design and smooth flowing curves. The Baleno being positioned over the Swift, it could carry a price tag over the Swift in the country.

Verdict - Going by specs and features on paper, the Baleno comes as a better option in the petrol trim. However, the diesel does feel underpowered as compared to the Elite i20. Overall, considering the safety features, low cost of ownership and an expected lucrative price point makes Baleno a winner in this segment. Maruti given its long standing trust with the local carbuyers is indeed quite capable of eating into a considerable market share that was enjoyed until now by the Elite i20 from Hyundai.
