The Maruti Suzuki Baleno might soon get the diesel hybrid powertrain from the Ciaz. The manufacturer is considering the more powerful mill for the new hatchback to increase its appeal.

The diesel trim of the Baleno presently on sale in the India is powered by the 1,248cc DDiS mill sourced from Fiat. This unit produces 74bhp of power and 190Nm of torque. The Baleno’s competition however – the likes of the Honda Jazz and the Volkswagen Polo – deliver power figures closer to 100bhp. It is this perception that the Baleno is underpowered is what Maruti Suzuki intends addressing with the engine from the Ciaz.

The diesel engine on the Maruti Suzuki Ciaz is also a Fiat sourced Multijet unit; branded in Maruti speak as the 200 DDiS. It churns out 89bhp of max power and 200Nm of peak torque. If Maruti uses this engine – which also comes with start-stop tech –the Baleno will get a 15bhp and 10Nm bump in power and torque respectively. Moreover, not only will this make the Baleno more fun to drive, it should also help the hatchback deliver better fuel economy.
