With an objective of making youth in technical institutes employable, India's largest passenger car manufacturer Maruti Suzuki has decided to take up five Industrial Training Institutes in Punjab state. This is a part of the Private Public Participation mode, which is being followed between Punjab Government and Maruti Suzuki. A Memorandum of Understanding was signed between B. Purusartha, Director for Technical Education under Punjab Government and Rajesh Uppal, Executive Director of Maruti Suzuki India Limited. More than 2000 students are expected to benefit from this initiative.
Industrial Training Institutes that have been taken up by Maruti Suzuki are located in Amritsar, Pathankot, Nabha, Malerkotla and Bassi Pathana. Not only will candidates be trained suitably for the automobile industry, but also for allied industries. As per Rajesh Uppal, both partners would have to sit together in order to carve out a long term strategy for handling challenges faced in these institutes. The focus would always be towards improving the quality of training, so that students are prepared for taking up industrial challenges. AR Talwar, Principle Secretary for Technical Education said that the department would be talking to several Multi National companies in order to get the best employment opportunities for students.
Over a period of time, one may just be able to see new design techniques taught at the training institutes being implemented at the Maruti Suzuki’s production level. It would give the company a better idea of how the customer perceives its engineering techniques. A similar experience may take place at the other corporations that these students work with, in the near future. But as can be seen in the immediate future, the course taught at these institutes would become closely aligned with industry requirements, which may need syllabi upgrades. Industry in India would greatly benefit if similar initiatives are taken up in other institutes as well.
