India’s largest car maker and second largest car exporter, Maruti Suzuki India Limited, restarted exporting its cars to Europe from Mundra port in Gujarat. After a gap of 4 years, Maruti re-started exports of its small cars to Europe by dispatching its first export consignment of newly-launched world strategic model A-Star.

The pilot consignment of 1534 models of A-Star was dispatched for the UK and Italy. It marked a historic moment for Maruti Suzuki as it not only depicted India as a global hub for manufacturing small cars but also Suzuki’s a revamped entry into the European market. The cars will reach Europe by early February 2009. Maruti A-Star will mark its presence in Europe as Suzuki Alto in the European countries.

“We are delighted to partner Mundra Port and Special Economic Zone Limited and NYK Line for this important initiative. Maruti Suzuki has ambitious plans for exports. We have the technology, skills and manufacturing capabilities to build global quality cars for international markets,” said Shinzo Nakanishi, MSIL Managing Director and CEO.

MSIL had launched its global strategic model in India, A-Star, in November last year. The model has been aesthetically and technologically designed to suit the tastes of European as well as Indian customers. Maruti Suzuki is looking forward to increasing its export volumes manifold and enhance its presence in Europe through the A-star.
