Maruti Suzuki has been working on its all-new 1.5-litre diesel engine – which will replace the ageing 1.3-litre DDiS unit – for quite some time now. This new oil burner is being developed in-house by the carmaker. Now, a leaked document has revealed all the details of the new diesel engine ahead of its impending launch.

The 1498cc four-cylinder BS-IV/OBS-II compliant diesel motor is capable of producing 70kW (which is approx. 94bhp) of power at 4000rpm. The torque stands at 225Nm and is available between 1,500-2,500rpm. The new engine will be mated to a six-speed manual transmission, which too is all-new for Maruti Suzuki. The new diesel engine will be available in Delta, Zeta and Alpha trim while the entry-level Sigma variant will continue to use the old 1.3-litre engine. The company’s mild-hybrid system won’t be a part of the new 1.5-litre engine for now. On the other hand, the diesel motor is rumoured to have a fuel economy of around 26kmpl. The new 1.5-litre engine will also be housed in the new-gen Ertiga and the S-Cross. The engine will be available in the VDi, ZDi, and ZDi+ guise in the Ertiga.
