The Maruti Celerio diesel was one of the most affordable compact hatchbacks in India and one of the most efficient. Maruti introduced a two cylinder diesel engine that displaced 800cc, a first amongst modern cars in the Indian market. Maruti has pulled the plug on the diesel engine owing to the lack of demand.

The Celerio diesel was introduced to cater to the demand of highly efficient compact diesel cars when the petrol prices were much higher than diesel. The engine developed 46bhp of power and 125Nm of torque and the Celerio seemed underpowered.

Also with the petrol and diesel price difference reducing thanks to deregulation, petrol cars regained their popularity in the lower segments, driving the demand of the Celerio further down. Maruti has finally decided to pull the plug on the Celerio diesel owing to the lack of demand. Thought the car might be available in the form of dealer stocks, Maruti has pulled it off the price-list on their website.
