The recession seems to have started taking its toll on the auto industry in India. Nearly all the major car manufacturers have postponed any major launches of their cars as the sales graphs show continuous decline and customers seem to have practically disappeared.

Fiat India Automobile had already announced the delay in the launch of its popular model and mid-size sedan, Fiat Linea. It now plans to launch the car sometime in December. Moreover, the launch of its Grand Punto has also been pushed back further to sometime next year rather than December 2008.

“We are optimistic that the market will improve in the last quarter of this year. We have pushed back new launches as the series of government initiatives are likely to bear fruit and improve sentiment by then. So, we will launch our new cars at an appropriate time,” said Rajeev Kapoor, CEO, FIA.

Maruti has already delayed the launch of its most awaited model, Maruti A-Star to late November 2008. It was earlier slated for a launch in October 2008 during the festive season. Hyundai has also pushed back the launch of its eagerly awaited model Huyndai i20, the successor to i10 in the popular i-series from the company.
