The country’s largest utility vehicle manufacturer Mahindra has launched the XUV500 automatic in Delhi at a starting price of Rs 14.51 lakh (Ex-showroom, Delhi). The automatic is available in W6, W8 and W10 variants in front-wheel drive only, while the all-wheel-drive version is not offered for now. The W6, W8 and W10 variants are priced at Rs 14.51 lakh, Rs 15.94 lakh and Rs 17.31 lakh respectively.

Due to the recent 2.0-litre diesel engine ban in Delhi, Mahindra has downsized its 2.2-litre engine to 1.99-litre which claims to generate similar power figure of 138bhp and 320Nm of torque. The engine comes mated to a six-speed automatic transmission which is developed by its Japanese component manufacturer Aisin.

In terms of features, the automatic variants continue to be offered with specs seen in the 2.2-litre model which is sold across the country. The W10 variant also continues to be offered with cruise control, seven-inch display with offline GPS-guided navigation, Bluetooth, USB and iPod connectivity, automaticheadlights, climate control, start-stop button, tyre pressure monitoring, Mahindra’s Blue Sense system and rain-sensing wipers.

It is to be seen if this downsized engine will also be introduced in more states following the recent NGT’s petition to extend the 2.0-litre diesel ban to Kerala and other states. Mahindra is also believed to be working on offering a 2.0-litre petrol engine option in the Scorpio and the XUV500 sometime later this year.
