Mahindra working on a Tesla rival?

Mahindra the only Indian car manufacturer that has gone mainstream with electric vehicles. After acquiring Maini and launching the E20 – the first indigenously designed electric vehicle, Mahindra also launched the e-Verito to further their commitment to electric mobility. Over the past year, Mahindra’s presence at Formula E and their acquisition of the design house of Pininfarina may be an indication of bigger things to come.

Let us start with the Mahindra Halo – the two-door electric sportscar which can hit a top whack of 160kmph and also run for 200kms on a single charge. If you ask us, the numbers are closing on to Tesla territory of the Tesla roadster that does a proven 400kms on a single charge with a maximum speed of 201kmph. With the design expertise of Pininfarina and the two decades of EV research experience of Mahindra Electric, Mahindra will be certainly backing itself up to build a Tesla rival.

Also, Mahindra has said that the target price for the Halo was Rs 30-35 lakh (about $50,000) which is almost half as much as the $1,01,000 starting price of the Tesla Roadster. At the London round of Formula E, Anand Mahindra, chairman Mahindra & Mahindra, said that he would want Pininfarina to design their own car and not limit themselves to designing cars for other brands.
