      Mahindra to rev up competition in premium SUV segment; launches SsangYong Rexton at a starting price of Rs. 17.67 lacs

      Amidst immense speculations and buzz in the market, Mahindra and Mahindra (M&M) Limited, the country's leading Utility Vehicle (UV) maker, launched its much anticipated high end Sports Utility Vehicle (SUV) SsangYong Rexton in the country on October 17, 2012. The new product comes from the stables of M&M's acquisition, the South Korea's fourth largest automobile manufacturer - SsangYong Motor Company. The Rexton has been launched in two variants - RX5 and RX7, with the former carrying an asking price of Rs. 17.67 lacs and the latter claiming a retail value of Rs. 19.67 lacs.

      The 2012 SsangYong Rexton marks M&M's entry into the premium SUV segment of the domestic automotive market for which the Indian enthusiasts had been waiting with utmost curiosity and adulation. Industry experts believe that the addition of Rexton of the already illustrious portfolio of M&M could prove to be a master stroke by the Indian UV maker, as it works its way towards building a solid rep in the premium SUV segment of the country.

      The SsangYong Rexton seems like a beast of an SUV from the outside, while the interiors offer an entirely different spectacle. The front fascia looks sturdy and incorporates huge chrome grille, Eagle eye shaped projector head lamps, L shaped parking lamps, chrome side mouldings, best-in-class 10 spoke 16 inch alloy wheels, stylish bumper integrated fog lamps and Outside Rear View Mirrors (ORVM) with integrated LED turn indicators among others. The rear end complements the front and is replete with LED tail lights, sporty rear spoiler and L shaped parking lamps.

      M&M has launched the Rexton SUV in two variants in the Indian market, namely - RX5 and RX7. The SsangYong Rexton RX5 comes fitted with a state-of-the-art 2.7 litre RX270 XDi diesel motor that churns out a peak power of 162 bhp and a torque of 340 Nm. The mill comes mated to a 5-speed manual transmission system along with a 'Torque on Demand' feature that lends the SUV an intelligent and smart All Wheel Drive (AWD) attribute. Further, the high end variant Rexton RX7 incorporates a 2.7 litre RX270 XVT engine under its hood, which rolls out a mammoth power and torque equation of 184 bhp and 402 Nm, respectively. The powerplant comes assimilated with a 5-speed E-tronic automatic transmission that has been built with the aid of Mercedes-Benz technology. The powerful motor installed in the RX7 entails it to boast of a top speed of 194 kmph. The certified fuel economies of the Rexton RX5 and RX7 variants by the government body ARAI are 12.4 and 11.18 km per litre, which are both astounding and impressive considering the immense power-torque performance of the vehicles.

      The vehicle features all the trimmings of a world class premium SUV and the company has covered most of the important safety attributes in the Rexton package. For instance, the SsangYong Rexton incorporates Electronic Stability Program (ESP) that constantly regulates the direction, speed and movement of the car and automatically starts corrective procedures if it detects any loss of control. Among the plethora of security features, those which score the maximum points are the Hill Descent Control (HDC), Anti Rollover Protection along with dual front and side air-bags for the driver and co-passengers.
       
      The freshly launched SsangYong Rexton competes against the likes of Toyota Fortuner, Ford Endeavour, Hyundai Santa Fe and Mitsubishi Pajero Sport in the Indian SUV market. Hence, some intense rivalry is expected between Rexton and its rivals in the coming months, while most domestic SUV enthusiasts will be closely following the proceedings related to the new Mahindra-SsangYong product.
