Mahindra had announced nine launches for 2016. Now it has added one more to the list. With ban of sale of bigger diesel engine vehicles, Mahindra is looking at adding petrol variants to its UV range. At the same time, it will also be expanding its electric vehicles portfolio.

Mahindra will be introducing the Verito EV and Maxximo EV with enhanced version of the e20’s powertrain for better performance and range. The Verito EV will enter the cab market and will be the first four-door electric vehicle to do that in India. Mahindra is in talks with the Delhi government to introduce electric cabs to help the NCR curb pollution.

Bangalore already has several Mahindra e20s running as taxis as these come with tamper-proof GPS and are also connected to high-speed internet. “We are exploring similar models in other parts of the country,” said Arvind Mathew, chief executive of Mahindra Reva Electric Vehicles.

“If we can scale to 40,000 cars, prices will drop,” Mathew added. “We are working on a common standard for all components and systems. It will build the industry and bring down costs.” India had committed to spend Rs 800 crore on improving electric vehicle ecosystem in the country and the union government will be supporting this initiative.
