Talk about utility vehicles and the name Mahindra and Mahindra instantly spring to your mind. One of the most unique quality about this carmaker is their potential to deliver cars that perform impressively on the tarmac as well as on the loose terrain effortlessly. Mahindra Thar has been one such car performs equally well on off-road trails much like it performs on the highway. The Mahindra Thar is available in India in three variants namelt – the DI 4x2, DI 4x4, and the CRDe 4x4 with AC. As a matter of chance Mahindra Thar is the first four wheel drive from the Indian carmaker to be blessed by an updated BS IV CRDe engine and also gets a soft-top which is present in no other regular car.

Before the Mahindra Thar days in India, the Jeep ruled the segment. Post launch, the Thar’s impressive design reminisces a true car fanatic of good old Jeep days. Mahindra Thar’s wheel arches sport decent yet stylish side indicators, this has been done to retain the old school charm, and moreover this move is also stated to be cost effective for the manufacturer. Classic round headlights adorn the front fascia and looks subtle yet carries the do-not-mess with me charm. Tyres are now broader and are well seated over a set of alloys. The rectangular front frame can be dropped onto the bonnet during your jungle safari trips! The Mahindra Thar is a three door off-roader, two doors at the front and one at the rear.

The Mahindra Thar shares some resemblance from Jeep, which once-upon-a-time had been a partner. The interior in Thar is not exactly luxurious or impressive, but the off-roader compensated with comfortable seating arrangement. The rear seats have been placed longitudinally to accommodate more passengers. The instrument cluster is basic and decent, with the only new addition on the dashboard being blower and heater function, from the air-conditioning panel.

The Mahindra Thar is powered by a 2.5-litre diesel engine that generates an impressive 105 bhp with 247 Nm of torque. The car's engine is mated to a five-speed gear-box. The 4x4 variant gets a Borg Warner manual shift with low reduction gear. The car boasts about a Drive by wire technology, which supposedly helps in driving a quicker and better controlled throttle response. Surprisingly Mahindra Thar does not come with a power-steering, but the steering wheel is big enough to ease the efforts required while making a turn. The car gets disc brakes in the front with nine-inch boosters and drum brakes at the rear wheels.

This four wheeled drive Thar from Mahindra may not see a huge fan following within city limits but off the city the car has a strong cult following. Mahidra Thar is often considered to be the cooler one, with just about two other competitors from the entry-level segment namely the Maruti Suzuki Gypsy and the Force Gurkha. Recently Mahindra has also introduced an air conditioning system which had been given a miss for a while now. Mahindra Thar with interesting set of features is offered at a very lucrative price tag of about Rs. 737201 (Ex-showroom, Delhi).
