Mahindra’s popular SUVs, the XUV500 and Scorpio witnessed a considerable drop in overall sales owing to Supreme Court’s order that banned on registration of passenger diesel vehicles in Delhi that featured engines over 2000cc. In order to comply with norms, Mahindra has finally introduced the much talked about 1.99-litre mHawk diesel engine in Scorpio and XUV500 for the Delhi region.

Under the hood, the SUVs basically feature a downsized 2.2-litre mHawk engine. Though the engine is now slightly smaller in size, the power and torque figures have almost been left untouched. The Mahindra Scorpio generates about 120bhp of power and 280Nm of torque, while the XUV500 generates about 138bhp and 320Nm of torque, which is about 10Nm lower than the existing model. However, the new 1.99-litre based Scorpio and XUV500 have been offered only in 2-Wheel drive option and comes mated to 5-speed and optional automatic transmission.

The new Mahindra Scorpio with 1.99-litre engine option has been introduced for price ranging between Rs 9.67 lakh – Rs 12.75 lakh, while the XUV500 with the 1.99L costs between Rs 11.58 lakh – Rs 15.51 lakh (Ex-showroom, Delhi). Post the court’s order, Mahindra has indeed been the first automaker in the country to offer compliant engine option. Both the SUVs continue to be offered in existing variant options loaded with similar features.
