As per a fresh update Indian automotive giant Mahindra has been planning on investing about Rs 1,000 Crore for petrol engine development. The company would use the amount spanning over a period of about two to three years. The company is reportedly working in collaboration with SsangYong Motor Company to develop a 2.2-litre petrol engine. Mahindra has also been working on developing in-house engines in 1.5-litre and 1.6-litre engine options.

Speaking more on the occasion to sources, M&M Executive Director Pawan Goenka said, “Over the next two-three years, we will end up spending Rs 1,000 crore in putting petrol engines in our vehicles. We are working on 1.5-litre petrol engine right now. The 2.2-litre petrol will come in Scorpio and XUV500 in mid-term.” Adding further in possibility of the brand sharing platform with SMC, he said, “The petrol engine we developed together, Ssangyong has launched in Tivoli and we have launched in KUV100. Platform sharing is more difficult. We are looking at platforms right now and when there is a right opportunity, we will definitely look at sharing platforms.”

The recently launched KUV 100 was indeed the first one to be offered with a 1.2-litre petrol engine option that was developed in collaboration with SsangYong. The company would be offering 1.2 litre, 1.5 litre, 1.6 litre and 2.2 litre option across its products. In order to stay clear from the 2.0-litre diesel engine ban, Mahindra had recently introduced 1.99-litre MHawk diesel engine in Delhi-NCR region.
